The Big Eat

While in the Arctic the Lost Penguins could be burning over 6000 calories on days when the conditions are right for a long day of racing and although they’ll be eating high calorie foods such as chocolate, sweets and nuts they will often be in calorie debt. Gaining a bit of extra weight to use up during the race to compensate for this has therefore been a real aim.

March 08 Update:

Their weight gaining started during the summer of 2007 but has generally conflicted with training and self consciousness. So far there’s been a mix of commitment and success. Congratulations to Rich ’I’m hungry’ Wall-Morris who has exceeded his target weight months ago, is now approaching clinical obesity and has developed expertise on the taste, value and fat content of all high street fast food and beer that’s available in south London.

Unfortunately Potter and Mike still have plenty of work to do. Demonstrating more active metabolisms (or lack of commitment) they’ve each only gained half a stone on top of their normal weight. Connie could now be the smallest person to start The Polar Challenge but will she have enough reserve to finish? Mike must also have similar concerns!

However, Rich ‘are you eating that?’ Wall-Morris has proven that with the right ‘training’ you can grow as quick as a Christmas turkey. With his expertise, storeys about how actors have gained weight and the changing in training from long sessions to short and low risk ones, Connie and mike can still gain a lot of weight during the final few days to the race.

Rich’s new top tips for bulking up:

  1. beer – plenty and often (Rich lager days may now be numbered, especially if he can find a offy that sells Stones)
  2. McDonalds banana milkshakes (1 calorie more energy than a chocolate milkshake)
  3. Visiting relatives at Christmas
  4. Time off exercise through injury or preparing for professional exams

This chart obviously needs updating - Rich has achieved the tonne whilst the blue and pink lines continue to show no progress.
